"Recently I have been drawn back to the landscape of my childhood. I have many vivid memories of walking along the beach between Rye Harbour and Winchelsea Beach, collecting shells, wood, and pieces of glass worn smooth by the sea. As a painter I am first and foremost interested in the material; its ability to be transformed by the process of colour mixing. I look to render reality in its most essential form; patches of colour, brilliance of light, detail and abstraction, there is a struggle between a need for both clarity and obscurity; hence work is built up and worn down many times. There is a dialogue between the aesthetic quality and the deeper significance, the poignant reminders of the transient nature of life and passage of time". - Siobhan Tanner
