Living just outside of Rye. The Brede and Tillingham Valleys inspire many of Cliff’s paintings. He has a fondness for quirky buildings including oasts, cottages and lighthouses all of which frequently appear in his work. Cliff started painting at the age of fourteen, initially specialising in abstract art until a move to East Sussex prompted him to experiment with watercolour in order to capture the beauty of the area. After a rough sketch he applies an undercoat followed by layers of paint spread with a palette knife or brush to create texture. The final image evolves gradually and is often different to the one originally planned. He has many private collectors mainly in Europe but some as far away as Australia and New Zealand.
